[excerpt] Get the look you want in 10 easy steps
I am a creature of habit--especially when it comes to makeup application. When I was a young makeup artist, I discovered that applying makeup in a certain order helped me stay organized and got the job done quicker. I still follow this routine whether I am making up Vanessa Williams, Meryl Streep, supermodel Heidi Klum, or myself. Do all 10 and you'll end up with an everyday polished look that's great for work or for lunch out with friends.
Step 1: Concealer
Use your fingers or a concealer brush to apply it under the eye, up to the lower lash line and the inner corner of the eye. Pat gently with fingertips to smooth and blend. To hide extradark circles, start with a corrective (pink-based) concealer; then layer on your regular yellow-toned concealer.
Step 2: Foundation
Apply it to even out skin tone and diminish redness.
Tip: Warm up foundation in the palm of your hand to make it glide on more easily; then apply with fingers or a makeup sponge. Cover blemishes with cream or stick foundation in the same shade.
Step 3: Powder
Use loose powder to set your concealer and foundation and create a smooth surface for color to adhere to (like priming before you paint). You can use a powder puff, but for a more sheer finish, use a powder brush.
Tip: After dipping your brush in powder, tap the handle on the counter to shake off the excess and then apply. Read the entire article. "
