[excerpt] Women who get good night sleep are likely to become slim, according to a latest study that brings more evidences about the positive effect of fine night rest on health.
Researchers led by Sanjay Patel, from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, studied almost 70,000 women and surprisingly did not find any connection between the trend and diet, reported the online edition of the Daily Mail.
The researchers monitored the women for 16 years, keeping records of their weight and sleep patterns.
Compared with the sound sleepers, women who slept no more than five hours a night were 32 percent more likely to experience major weight gain - defined as an increase of 33 lb (15 kg) or more - during the course of the study, the researchers said.
They were also 15 percent more likely to become obese compared with women who slept seven hours.
Obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI), a measurement relating weight and height, of 30 or more.
