Riding in style

For years, women were seen as an ornament on the back of a motorcycle.
Today, however, those leather-clad mamas are telling their men to move over and get their own ride.
Lily Gonzalez, 42, got her first motorcycle as an anniversary present from her husband, Paul, two years ago and has been taking to the roads ever since.
"I think it is the sense of freedom that draws women to riding," Gonzalez said. "It is just you and the road."
Although she has been riding for only a few years, Gonzalez has always been interested in the world of motorcycles and the culture that surrounds the riders.
"I even went to the first Bikefest (on South Padre Island) almost 11 years ago," she said. "And I didnât even have a bike; it has just always interested me."
Motorcycles and riding is so important to Gonzalez and her husband that they had a Harley Davidson-themed wedding in 2002. On a whim during a trip to Laredo this past month, Gonzalez bought a new bike: a 2005 Harley Davidson Dyna Lowrider.

"I love going to rallies and road trips with my husband’s club, the Iron Pigs," she said. "You meet so many people from all over and create a bond with them — almost like a sisterhood because it takes a certain woman to ride."
