A North Korean monthly has laid down the rules for makeup use in the puritanical Stalinist state, warning against decadent Western influences in the application of facepaint. The October edition of the Joseon Yeoseong magazine said makeup should be appropriate to location, environment and context and cautioned that it reflects a woman’s intelligence and morals. Makeup should be applied in consideration of the tasks for the day, the magazine said, being light enough to look natural when women go out in the day and only more colorful if they perform on stage or “dance in the open air” at night.
