Red Hat Society turns the simple reality of aging into a raucous good time YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN FOR A GOOD TIME WHEN the evening's drink special matches the color of your hat. The Red Hat Lady -- vodka, cherry vodka, amaretto, Southern Comfort, sloe gin, sweet 'n' sour mix and lemon-lime soda, shaken over ice and served in a martini glass -- comes out as wanton-red as cheap toenail polish, and 69-year-old Wanda Prince wants some. "I'll have eight or 10 of those Red Hat things," she tells the bartender. "You want EIGHT of them?" "Mmm, probably 10." He blinks. Although she's known in certain circles....

Small but significant changes that make a huge difference 1. Reach for concealer first. A good concealer makes the most immediate and dramatic difference in how you look. It lightens dark circles, brightens your face, and makes you look well rested. Look for a creamy formula that's yellow based and one shade lighter than your skin tone. Use your fingers or a concealer brush to apply a generous amount of concealer under the eyes, up to the lash lines and at the innermost corner of the eyes. Gently pat with your fingertips to smooth, then lock it in with loose powder....

Pull up a chair for salon-style skin care in your home

Beauty-care companies offer microdermabrasion kits you can use in your own bathroom for less money and none of the inconvenience of a doctor's visit. Many of the products come with the cosmetic version of an orbital sander -- a battery-operated resurfacing tool; others require that you use your fingers to do the buffing. Our testers loved these kits and achieved nice results after the first few uses. But be cautious: People with sensitive or acne-prone skin may need to use the products less often than the instructions indicate. (Our testers with acne-prone skin experienced breakouts.) And some people shouldn't use them at....

Imagine being a female -- in what you think is a monogamous relationship -- going to your gynecologist for a routine checkup and your quarterly contraceptive injection. Now imagine that you've just been diagnosed with an STD. Think this would never happen? Think again. Recent discoveries done by the National Institutes of Health, University of North Carolina and Johns Hopkins University show that females who use birth control through an injection are at a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases than those who take it in another form -- either the patch, the birth control pill or the faithful condom. A....

Post-40 weight gain avoidable

Posted by: smilie on Tuesday/September 14/2004 - 08:28 PM
Lifestyle
After hearing about complaints of weight gain after 40, one might assume that women age 40 to 50 are predisposed to gain weight in their pre- and perimenopausal years. This, however, is untrue. Women do have a greater tendency to gain weight around their midsections earlier in life than men as fat deposits settle in and around the abdominal area. Nevertheless, this weight gain is not necessarily due to the hormonal shifts of menopause but rather is most likely linked to a reduced metabolic rate, less activity and a calorie imbalance. As people age, unless they actively engage in a regular....

On a recent plane trip my family had plenty of opportunity to try out the Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray, which kept our dried-out skin feeling fresh - though somewhat dripping when we overdid it. The face spray contains "bio-activated aloe water" - whatever that means - a "potent skin firming agent" and soothing chamomile and vitamin E (so don't think it's just water!). The spray is good to use when your skin feels tired and dry from air-conditioning or heating. Be careful and spray it from a sufficient distance so you only get a mist of the stuff, otherwise it....

Why it's better to be fit than thin

Posted by: smilie on Friday/September 10/2004 - 10:43 AM

WHEN it comes to avoiding heart disease, being fit may be more important than being thin, researchers say. A study from the University of Florida shows lack of fitness is a stronger risk factor for developing heart disease than being overweight or obese. The study involved 906 women whose health histories were tracked from 1996 to 2000 after their first referral with heart problems. It found 76 per cent were overweight and 70 per cent took little exercise. As well as being measured for weight, height and body mass index, the women were asked about their ability to do common physical activities at....

ALWAYS make sure your bosom is suitably tanned - there's nothing worse than a pasty white cleavage. You can always cheat with a bit of fake tan.

Get the right support to show off your chest at its best. If you have a small bust try a push-up bra for a curve-enhancing cleavage. Ample curves should be reined in or heaved up but never allowed to drop south. Try www.figleaves.com for push-up bras in larger sizes.

Brush Up on Autumn's New Styles

Summer saw women everywhere embracing their natural hair texture, whether it’s straight, curly or a combination of the two. Tied up loosely or left to flow, hair was easy to care for and look after, not to mention simple to style. But it’s autumn now. So does a new season mean more hair maintenance and lots of wacky styles? According to celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie, autumn/winter will see the continuation of natural-looking hair, but with more maintenance. “Bed-head tousled wave is big for autumn but it’s a more polished and updated look. Loose but cleverly formed curls, which are flat towards the root and....

ANY day you turn to any of the talk shows, inevitably there is a discussion on the attitudes, behaviour or conduct of today’s young people. But as someone says, perhaps we are misunderstanding our young people. Instead of continually criticising them we should look at ourselves and, maybe, find innovative ways to deal with them. Here are some tips which may help us understand our “troublesome” youth. Sometimes they even speak in a language which we, older ones, do not understand. Everytime I have a close encounter with a younger person I find myself categorising them: Is he or she ‘X’ or ‘Y’ or....
